Program Description:
This program is for students who find or arrange their own internships abroad.  If you need help finding an internship, contact the Office of Study Abroad.


I. ARRANGING FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT:  Contact your department and make arrangements for academic credit for your internship.  You will be required to provide proof of approval from your department chair for the academic credit.

  NOTE: If you do not need academic credit for your internship, just register with us so we know where you will be.

II. ADMISSION:  When you have demonstrated that accommodation and support have been secured in the host country and secured approval of the internship from the appropriate parties, and when the Office of Study Abroad has verified your eligibility for study abroad, you will be admitted for Independent Internship Abroad.  You will also be required to execute Independent Study Abroad Agreement at that time.

III. FINANCIAL AID:  As a participant in a study abroad program through WIU, you may be eligible for the following: Pell Grant, SEOG, Perkins Loan, PLUS Loan, Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, MAP Award or your privately awarded scholarship with consent of awarding organization. Tuition waivers may also apply. If you will be using financial aid, the Office of Study Abroad will submit a budget to the Financial Aid Office on your behalf. This budget will be determined using information you provide in your Contract as well as your current tuition plan and student fee information.

IV. WIU STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE:  Students participating in any program abroad for credit are required to have world-wide health care coverage, emergency evacuation coverage and repatriation of remains coverage.  If you have waived out of WIU student health insurance, you must provide a letter from your insurance carrier on company letterhead that states the name of the student and that all three items aforementioned are covered under the policy.  If you insurance carrier does not cover those items, please contact the Office of Study Abroad to learn of other options. 

V. DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING INDEPENDENT INTERNSHIP ABROAD PROPOSAL:  Completed proposals must be submitted to the Office of Study Abroad by the following deadlines:

a. FALL semester enrollment: April 1
b. SPRING semester enrollment: October 1
c. SUMMER term enrollment: March 1

VI. WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PROGRAM:  Requests for withdrawal from the contract must be submitted in writing and must arrive in the Office of Study Abroad one week prior to add/drop deadline for that academic term.

VII. SUBMISSION OF GRADES: Participant will be graded according to the academic department’s policies and procedures.
