Program Description:
WIU in Belfast is designed to give faculty members the opportunity to travel abroad and experience life in another culture with a group of WIU students.  No previous international experience is required to be a faculty leader for WIU in Belfast.  The chosen faculty member must be willing to commit to teaching the course and accompany the students on the three-week travel portion.  The activities, accommodations, field trips, and many instructional components including lectures and panel discussions are pre-arranged as part of the Queen's University Belfast International Summer School so faculty members may find this less complicated than developing their own study abroad course or program from scratch.

Belfast has a fascinating history and culture and the program is designed to serve students of varying interests. Faculty in almost any discipline should find the program rewarding and be able to design a course that fits in with their own interests as well as those of students who would like to study abroad.  For more details, visit the Queen's International Summer School website and select the Irish Studies Summer School option.  This will provide details about the current year's program/itinerary, costs, etc.

Program Benefits
The faculty member chosen to lead WIU in Belfast will have all of his/her travel expenses, inclufing airfare, accommodation, and per diem allowance for food, covered by the host university and student participants.  In addition to this benefit, the faculty leader will receive a stipent of $1,000.

Faculty requirements
• Must be a current WIU faculty member
• Must have approval of Chair of Department and Dean of College
• Must develop and teach one course (divided into three semester hours of UNIV 379 and three semester hours of 279 or 379 credit in the department.  Graduate credit may also be offered.)
• Must market the WIU in Belfast program in conjunction with Study Abroad and Outreach to reach a minimum of 10 participants
• Must help recruit future faculty leaders after returning
• Summer rotations are not a consideration for appointment as a faculty leader for WIU in Belfast

General instructions/timeline
1. Applications are available online throu the "Apply Now" button on this page.
NOTE: Faculty interested in the Faculty Fellowships, WIU in Barcelona or a traditional Study Abroad Course/Program should not use this application.  For more information on those offerings, please see the Faculty/Staff section of our website.

2. Prior to submitting an application, you should familiarize yourself with the Queen's University Belfast Irish Studies Summer School offerings by browsing the website listed above.  You will need to indicate how your proposed course ties into the themes and activities that are already part of the program.  While minor variations occur in the itinerary from year to year, it remains fundamentally the same.

3. The following information must be completed and electronically submitted no later than 11:59 pm on the stated deadline date:
   WIU in Belfast questionnaire
   Leader Agreement signature document

4. After the deadline, applicaitons will be sent to your department chair and Dean's Office representative for their support.  The Office of Study Abroad and Outreach will review the applications.  You will be contacted by email with the results by the end of the semester.
